TRADEMARK RULES & BRAND GUIDELINES
General
The BeagleBoard.org® Foundation is dedicated to providing education in and promotion of the design and use of open-source software and hardware in embedded computing. As part of this, we provide open-source software (e.g., firmware and/or operating system source code) and open-source hardware designs (e.g., schematics and PCB layouts) for our devices. The BeagleBoard.org® brand and trademarks belongs to the BeagleBoard.org® Foundation and include:

Acceptable use of the BeagleBoard.org® brand is outlined below.
When to Use
- In connection with the sale and distribution of official BeagleBoard.org® products
- When used in this way the logo or trademark must link to our website www.beagleboard.org
- In a way that highlights your connection with BeagleBoard.org® such as referencing an accessory you’ve created for the BeagleBoard.org® product range
How NOT to use the brand
- In any way that would give the false impression you are endorsed by BeagleBoard.org® without prior consent
- Owning and using a domain names containing “BeagleBoard” or “BeagleBone”
- In a false or derogatory light
- To manufacture, sell or give away merchandise
- In any way that will take advantage of our brand and reputation
- In a similar but subtly different way
- Associating the brand with false or counterfeit products
What else should I know?
- For non-BeagleBoard.org® materials, if our brand is referenced your business name, brand, and product should take the most prominent position
- When referencing any of the official BeagleBoard.org® products, such as “BeagleBone® Black”, “BeagleBoard.org®” must always be included as the first part of the naming convention.
- In this example the correct naming convention is “BeagleBoard.org® BeagleBone® Black”.
- Both “B”s in any registered version of the “BeagleBone” or “BeagleBoard” text should always be capitalized.
- “The” should never be used in front of any BeagleBoard.org® reference.
- “The BeagleBoard.org® PocketBeagle” would be incorrect. “BeagleBoard.org® PocketBeagle” is correct.

The following guidelines are examples specific to the BeagleBoard.org logo but apply to the BeagleBoard.org Embedded, BeagleBoard.org Compatible, and BeagleBoard.org Approved logos.

Do not
- Rotate the logo
- Separate the dog image from “BeagleBoard.org®” text
- Change the color scheme
- Repositions elements of the logo
- Adjust sizing without proportional scale
- Add visual effects like shadows or gradients
- Add too or remove elements of the dog design

BeagleBoard.org® Embedded Program
What is it
Partners in this program are companies or individuals that use an official BeagleBoard.org® product as part of their design or end product. Examples include using BeagleBoard.org® BeagleBone® Black as the embedded system in a gateway or industrial tablet. Partners in this program will be authorized to use the BeagleBoard.org® Embedded logo on their product or product packaging.

Specific Branding Guidelines
- All guidelines for BeagleBoard.org®’s brand apply to participants of this program.
- Principles of those guidelines apply to the use of the “BeagleBoard.org® Embedded” logo on your product packaging and product itself.
- Promotion and marketing of an embedded product must be done so under your brand referencing your association with the BeagleBoard.org Foundation through the Embedded program.
What products are part of this program today?
BeagleBoard.org® Compatible Program
What is it
Suppliers part of this program are interested in a licensing agreement with BeagleBoard.org® that will allow them to develop a derivative of an official BeagleBoard.org® product (e.g., a product from the BeagleBoard®, BeagleBone®, and PocketBeagle® product families) under their own brand. The BeagleBoard.org® team will support the supplier where appropriate throughout the development, launch, and ongoing promotion of the product. We are here to help ensure your success!
How to join
Start by filling out the request form here. Once you’ve submitted your request the BeagleBoard.org team will reach out to discuss next steps including establishing a license agreement to ensure the below T&Cs are met, aligning on the product’s details, and overall timeline for launch.
Terms and Conditions
“BeagleBoard Compatible" is defined as a circuit board that:
- Is manufactured from a modified version of the hardware design of an official BeagleBoard.org® product
- Fully supports and ships with an installed copy of a version of software designated by the BeagleBoard.org® Foundation for an official BeagleBoard.org® product
- Has been tested by the BeagleBoard.org® Foundation (or its designated representative(s)) and has passed the testing;
- Includes source code and hardware design that is released using one or more open source licenses approved by the BeagleBoard.org® Foundation
You also agree to indemnify and defend the BeagleBoard.org® Foundation against any claim arising out of the circuit board.
Additionally, while the BeagleBoard.org team will work with the supplier to ensure the products success, all aspects of product ownership are the supplier’s sole responsibility. These standards include, but are not limited to:
- Accessories (which we encourage!) and the applicability for use with this product
- Specific hardware support such as product failures, RMA’s, etc
- Manufacturing and associated quality
- Product compliance
- An entry in our EEPROM database recorded in a Github-hosted readme.md file.
General support for a board in this program will be available from the BeageBoard.org® community specific and again, the BeagleBoard.org® team is here to help ensure the product’s success!

- Principles of those guidelines apply to the use of the “BeagleBoard.org® Compatible logo
- This logo will not be separately used with any peripherals without the express approval of the BeagleBoard.org Foundation.
- Promotion and marketing of an approved product must be done so under your brand reference your association with the BeagleBoard.org Foundation
- As an example, you are NOT authorized to use any official BeagleBoard.org® logo on the product’s PCB silk screen

What is it
Partners in this program are authorized to manufacture and sell peripheral devices for official products of BeagleBoard.org® (e.g., a product from the BeagleBoard®, BeagleBone®, and PocketBeagle® product families) under their own brand. An example of a product in this program is the element14 LCD Display Cape.
How to join
Start by filling out the request form here . There's no charge for being "BeagleBoard.org Approved", just a verification that needs to happen. If your product is of good quality and compatibility, we want people to know to use it!
Once you’ve submitted your request the BeagleBoard.org team will reach out to review your proposal and ensure the following T&Cs are been met.
Terms and Conditions
For a peripheral device to be eligible for a license for this trademark, the below requirements must be fulfilled. The official BeagleBoard.org® product with which a “BeagleBoard Approved” peripheral device is intended to be used will be referred to as an “accessorized product”:
- The peripheral device has been tested by the BeagleBoard.org® Foundation (or its designated representative(s)) for use with the accessorized product and has passed the testing
- The peripheral device has been determined by the BeagleBoard.org® Foundation (or its designated representative(s)) to provide a satisfactory “out-of-box” experience for users for use with the accessorized product
- All source code and/or hardware design for the peripheral device must be released using one or more open source licenses approved by the BeagleBoard.org® Foundation
- If a license is granted for the peripheral device, any future revised version of the peripheral device must be approved by BeagleBoard.org® before the “BeagleBoard.org Approved” logo may be used in connection with the revised version.
- If any software is required to support your product, you'll also need to ensure its default image is built by bb.org_4gb_stable.sh.

What is it
Partners in this program will manufacture official BeagleBoard.org® products bearing the official BeagleBoard.org® branding. Becoming a manufacturing partner represents the highest level of partnership and commitment to the BeagleBoard.org® Foundation. Together we will work to shape the future of BeagleBoard.org® by introducing new products to the market and improving the costing and proposition of current ones.
